Cleome gynandra, commonly known by several names such as spider plant, African cabbage, cat’s whiskers etc is a green leafy vegetable that is found growing all over the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The hemoglobin levels and the count of red blood cells, white blood cells, and lymphocytes were restored to normal level in mice treated with the methanol extract of spider plant. The leaves and roots of spider plant are used in some parts of India as an anti-diabetic remedy. It has been found that this plant has the ability to lower blood sugar levels. The anti-diabetic action of spider plant may be due to the presence of the antioxidant phenolic compounds in it.
